TODAY we’re looking back at some of the major roadworks that were taking place in the city of Carlisle in 1968.

These photos from October of that year show the work which was said to be well up to schedule as stage two of the Shaddongate improvement scheme took shape.

It was hoped that the work would be completed before the target date of May, 1969.

The section featured in our photos was a continuation of stage one from Caldewgate to the Border Dairy, and was intended to give easier access to vehicles visiting factories in the area.

Shaddongate is still a bustling trade area today.

Dixon’s Chimney which was constructed in 1836 can be seen in the background of the photos and is still a city landmark.
