A councillor said that he would like to see the 30 mile per hour limit extended at either end of a village in Cumbrian.

Cumbria County Councillor for Corby and Hayton, Roger Dobson, said extending the 30 mile per hour limit along the A69 at both ends of Warwick Bridge near Carlisle is one of "many steps" that could help address what he sees as the traffic challenges in the area.

Cllr Dobson also said that he would be "keen" to support 20 mile per hour speed limits in villages where residents want to adopt it.

"Looking at that stretch of road, I believe we need to move the 30 mile per hour limit to extend it in both directions. At the eastern end towards Brampton there are four houses where people have the greatest difficulty in entering and leaving their premises," said Cllr Dobson.

"One of them at least is on a blind bend and to get out they absolutely rely upon a mirror at the opposite side of the road and listening to the traffic.

"At the west end, the 30 mile per hour limit only comes into force at the entrance for the bridge.

"The road that comes in from Wetheral is a very difficult road to navigate because you are on quite a severe hill to access the A69 and you have got traffic coming from the bridge which is difficult to hear and traffic coming down from the hill, which is difficult to see.

"The traffic coming down the hill is allowed to travel at 40 miles per hour, so it would be in everybody's interest to move those further apart."

On giving people the option to voice their preference for a 20 mile per hour limit, Cllr Dobson added: "Like many villages in this part of Cumbria, vehicles travelling at 30 miles per hour are not good news. There are pedestrians about and a safer approach would be to introduce a 20 mile per hour speed limit.

"I would say that generally, I am keen that where the local residents want it that we adopt 20 mile per hour speed limits. That's for the all of the villages in my division.

"I don't want to impose it. Certainly, the feedback I have had is that a lot of people would value 20 mile per hour limits, particularly if they were observed."

Cllr Dobson recently voiced his concerns over the use of the section of the A69 running through Warwick Bridge by HGVs, saying he thought the bridge at the western end of Warwick Bridge was too narrow to support the vehicles.

Carlisle City Councillor for Brampton and Fellside, Raymond Tinnion said: "It's okay putting a 20 mile per hour limit in, but you also have to enforce that.

"To enforce it you would have to have a clear view for a speed camera van and in a village you haven't always got that clear view.

"Even at 30 miles per hour, you can very rarely do [that speed] through a village because there are always parked cars everywhere.

"It's not something that is wrong, but I'm just not sure you can get the enforcement side of it."
