THE number of coronavirus cases in Barrow increased by 53 in the last 24 hours, official figures show.

A total of 7,491 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 in Barrow when the UK coronavirus daily dashboard was updated on September 16 (Thursday), up from 7,438 on Wednesday.

The rate of infection in Barrow now stands at 11,227 cases per 100,000 people, higher than the England average of 11,107.

Across the UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 26,326 over the period, to 7,339,009.

The figure does not include cases for Scotland, due to a technical issue affecting the availability of the data on the coronavirus dashboard.

However, there were no new coronavirus deaths recorded in the latest 24-hour period in Barrow.

The dashboard shows 165 people had died in the area by September 16 (Thursday) – which was unchanged from Wednesday.

It means there have been no deaths in the past week, which is a decrease on two the previous week.

They were among 19,093 deaths recorded across the North West.

The figures include anyone who died within 28 days of a positive test result for Covid-19, and whose usual residence was in Barrow.
