County McCountyface was one of several name suggestions for the new unitary council covering, South Lakeland, Barrow and Eden in a public poll held by Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron.
But Westmorland and Furness topped the poll receiving almost 800 votes from the public.
Nearly 2,000 people casted their vote to find a name of the new authority, following the Government’s decision to reorganise Cumbria’s councils earlier this summer.
The most popular options were:
Westmorland and Furness – 798 votes
Lakes and Dales – 451 votes
Westmorland, Penrith and Furness – 196 votes
Barrow, South Lakeland and Eden – 156 votes
Cumbria East – 110 votes
Westmorland - 62 votes
South Cumbria - 11 votes
County McCountyface - 10 votes
Mr Farron will present the results to the Local Government Minister Luke Hall during a meeting tomorrow.
“I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who took part in this poll,” he said.
“People are very attached to their history and heritage so I’m not surprised to see a name with ‘Westmorland’ in the title end up being the most popular option.
“Whether Westmorland and Furness ends up being the name of the new council we’ll have to wait and see, but what I think is really important is that the final decision has the support of local people – not simply a name dreamt up by officials sat behind a desk in London.”
