FARMERS William and Mark Towers not only hosted the 147th North Lonsdale Show in 1991 but scooped several major prizes with their Friesian herd.

Against fierce competition from the cream of south Cumbria’s cattle farmers, the Towers partnership, from Aldingham, which owned the Bardsea showfield, carried off seven awards.

They won awards for champion Friesian bull, champion Friesian female and best Friesian bull calf.

However, they were pipped for the supreme champion prize, which went to John Fell, of Newbiggin, with his magnificent Holstein Friesian cross, Peasehaven Rocket Mitzie, four-year-old and a second calf cow.

Mr Fell, in partnership with his wife Joan and son Keith, returned home with four top trophies.

It was also a day to remember for the Harrison family, of Low Meathop, Grange, in the sheep classes.

Last time’s winner of the supreme champion award, Carole Harrison, 14, and her brother, Stephen, 13, with their Jacob sheep, were beaten - by their parents.

Mum and Dad Peter and Anne Harrison triumphed in 1991 to take the supreme best in show award with their pure texel ram, which also won the best in class.

Their children were still among the honours, winning the champion Jacob sheep award and best pair of females in all breeds trophy.

There was something for all the family at the show, including a fair, a host of stalls, the Furness Building Society hot-air balloon and trade stands.

Winner of the children's pet show was 12-year-old Dawn Salt with her King Charles Spaniel Mac.

Entries were high in the arts and handicrafts sections. The Old Mill cup for most points in the children's classes went to Katie Maguire, from Barrow.

Ulverston rose grower Fred Barnes won six first prizes, five with roses and one with a container of flowers. His mother-on-law Mrs E I Birkett, of Swarthmoor, prevented him making a clean sweep of all the classes he entered, by winning the one specimen rose class.

In the wine-making classes Jack Houghton, of Barrow, won three first prizes, three seconds and three thirds.
