ASKAM'S Joanne Martin was on top of the world after being chosen to be carnival queen for the town in 1995.

Dowdales School pupil Joanne, 15, was selected from a shortlist of ten to become Askam Carnival Queen and two friends Julie Hellon and Gemma Wardle were chosen as her ladies-in-waiting.

Joanne, who lived in Duke Street, would be supported on carnival day by parents Harry and Linda, brothers Aron and Clinton and sister Leanne.

She said: “I am very pleased and looking forward to being crowned on carnival day. My family is really happy for me.”

In June 1995 not even dark clouds and the odd spot of rain could overshadow the dazzle and razzamatazz of the Askam and Ireleth parade.

A brightly-coloured procession of floats, dancers and bands weaved its way through the village streets, waved on by cheering crowds.

Fred Flintstone, Cleopatra and Father Christmas were just a few of the celebrities who made an appearance.

And the fun was all in aid of numerous good causes. Each year the event raised thousands of pounds for local charities.

The carnival finished up at Askam rugby ground, where coconut shies, rifle ranges and a bouncy castle kept the crowds entertained.

Carnival Queen Joanne Martin, accompanied by ladies-in-waiting Gemma Wardle and Julie Hellon, added a regal touch to proceedings.

“I’m having a really good day,” said Joanne.

“It was really good riding on the carnival, with everybody waving and cheering and I’m really looking forward to the coming year representing Askam."

In the dancing contests the Imperial School of Dance picked up trophies in all four of the children's categories, while Dance Unlimited won the adult contest with a routine inspired by Charlie Chaplin.

Helen's School of Dance was judged the winner of the mothers' category.

Pat Rawlinson, secretary of the carnival committee, was delighted with the way the day went. "We've been lucky with the weather which is the most important thing," she said.
