A WOMAN who was injured in an incident involving a fairground ride remains in a critical condition in hospital, police have confirmed.

An investigation has been launched by Cumbria Police and the Health and Safety Executive after three people were hurt while at the Fudstock festival in Barrow on Saturday night.

The 20-year-old woman, who police said was from the Barrow area, is currently being treated at Royal Preston Hospital after she was transferred from Furness General Hospital.

She remains in a critical, but stable, condition, police said yesterday.

She was one of three involved, all from the Barrow area, in the incident.

A man, also 20, has now been discharged from Royal Preston Hospital and a woman, 51, was treated and discharged from Furness General Hospital.

Inquiries are still taking place at Cavendish Park, where the festival took place, as the authorities conduct their investigations.

A police spokesman said: “Inquiries are continuing in a joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive.

“The public may notice activity in and around the site as this continues and we thank people for their patience as this work is carried out.”

On Tuesday morning, a Joint Incident Command Unit van was spotted on the Cavendish Park field with a police cordon still in place around the area.

Barrow’s deputy mayor Cllr Hayley Preston sent her support to everyone affected by the accident and thanked the emergency services for their assistance.

Cllr Preston said: “Our best wishes go out to all affected by the accident at Fudstock.

“Also our thanks to the emergency services and festival organisers for such a calm and quick evacuation of the site following the accident.

“If you have been affected by the incident please contact the NHS helpline or other local organisations for support. Also, contact the police if you witnessed the event.

“Our community remains in shock over the news and our love and support goes to all those involved and their families.”

Police were called to the event at around 8.30pm after they were alerted to the incident.

Firefighters, paramedics and an air ambulance all attended the scene on Barrow Island.

It is believed two of the people involved were on a ride when the incident occurred.

Following the incident, Fudstock organisers said: “Our thoughts and best wishes are with those involved, as we await further news. We appreciate this is upsetting and we’d ask people to be kind and not speculate out of respect to the families and friends. If you’ve been affected by the incident and would like support please contact the NHS mental health crisis line on 0800 953 0110. Thank you all for your continued support and Fudlove."

Fudstock launched in 2018 in memory of Barrow man Richard Thorne - known as Fud - who died from bowel cancer aged just 38.
