BACK in the 1980s and 1990s the Radio One Roadshow was a regular visitor to The Glebe at Bowness, attracting thousands of spectators to watch popular DJs and some of the best-selling bands of the day perform in the Lake District.

August 29, 1996, was a warm and sunny day as the roadshow brought out the crowds to Bowness.

Residents from across South Lakeland and Furness joined pop fans from throughout the North West at the annual summer roadshow at the Glebe.

The show went out live to a national Radio One audience of millions from 11.30am to 12.30pm.

DJ Lisa I’Anson was in charge of the fun and games.

Headline band Let Loose sent the young crowd wild.

Other bands playing were Tony Tee, JX, Audio Webb and Catatonia.

BBC officials estimated the crowd to be about 6,000.

Our photographers were also on hand to capture images at the 1997 roadshow, when DJ Mark Goodier was the host.

Meanwhile, in 1999, whether it was the glorious weather, the prospect of seeing Another Level or DJ Dave Pearce who attracted the crowds was unclear - but the overall impact of the Radio One roadshow stirred the Glebe to boiling point.

Bowness welcomed its biggest influx of people since the summer season began as more than 6,000 music fans from across south Cumbria besieged the Glebe for a morning of free entertainment.

DJ Dave Pearce, famed for his dance anthems and gigs in Ibiza, was a seasoned professional with large crowds and he soon had the crowd sizzling in the midday sunshine.

The usual competitions, such as bits and pieces, involved members of the audience competing to win various Radio One goodies.

Boy band Another Level were a real crowd pleaser. The chart toppers had recently celebrated chart success with From The Heart, taken from the Notting Hill soundtrack.

Other headline acts included Apollo Four Forty and the Rough Drivers.
