A BELOVED historian is handing over his walking stick and hat to a new tour guide after nearly 40 years of leading walks across the sands.
Local expert John Murphy has made the ‘difficult decision’ to retire from leading his popular walks across the sands to Piel Island.
The Barrovian, who has recently filmed with Springwatch presenter Chris Packham, said he was ‘more than happy’ to pass on the reins after four decades of tours.
The 72 year-old has chosen Ben Pinder, a park ranger at Haven Lakeland Leisure Park, to carry on his legacy.
“Ben’s knowledge is amazing and he has an infectious personality,” Mr Murphy said.
“I am more than willing to hand over the reins to Ben who will be a great asset to the town.
“I’m still going to be involved in the tours but I can’t physically do the walks anymore.
“I’m going to continue doing the island tours whilst I can but I’ll be using the ferry to get across instead. After such a long time, I just can’t do the walk anymore. But I’m really excited to see Ben take on the role.”
Mr Pinder, who is originally from North Wales, spent a lot of time in Furness growing up - and has been brushing up on his knowledge of the area.
“I’ve been doing tonnes of revision to prepare for the role,” the 36-year-old said.
“I’m fascinated by history - it’s a real hobby of mine so I find Barrow’s past really interesting, especially the monks, the Vikings, Piel Island. The area is full of history.”
The Milnthorpe resident said his ‘eyes and ears’ are wide open to learn the skills and expertise Mr Murphy has fostered over 40 years.
He said: “I’m ready to learn.
“It’s a big responsibility but I feel very proud to have been chosen and privileged to have met John.
“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I’ve got big shoes to fill but I’ll try my best to carry on the legacy.
“We want to get the schools in the area involved in not just the walks but lots of other activities learning about nature and the surroundings.
“We would also like to work with young offenders and children with Aspergers and autism to ensure everyone can get a chance to immerse themselves in nature.
“There’s so much knowledge for John to share and pass onto the next generation.”
Mr Murphy’s last walk across the sands to Piel Island will take place on Saturday September 4 before he officially hands over his walking stick.
