THE summer festival in Barrow was a real people pleaser despite the weather not living up to the name this weekend.

Friday and Saturday saw hundreds arrive at the Matt Johnson Prestige Stadium – home of the Barrow Raiders – for music, dancing, drinks, and post-lockdown fun from midday onwards.

Barrow Raiders were hoping for some sunshine over the weekend but the weather was not for complying which meant that many of the festival-goers were in waterproof ponchos and raincoats. Two marquees had been erected at the stadium to protect festival-goers on the wet weekend. This sort of event is just what Barrow needs,” one woman said.

“We came last year as well when it was a bit sunnier but it is brilliant still. You forget about the rain when you have had a few drinks.

“There is nothing else like this in terms of festivals in this part of the county so it is great. We got in around when it opened up but it really gets going towards the evening time.

“It is a great event and we would definitely come back again next year.”

Another described the weather as a being a real “festival experience” echoing some of the expectations of many music festivals across the country such as Glastonbury or Creamfields.

Hedkandi was the main headliner for the event, playing a live set for those who enjoy the sounds of the global dance brand.

Crowds were already gathering in the early afternoon as many jostled for position in front of the stage for the headliner later on.

The event also saw local acts acts such as Oasis tribute band Mad4It, Joel Talbot, Groovebox, the Thieving Magpies and Jonny Williams feat. Emma Howarth.

Going into the weekend the club had sold around 1800 tickets but walk-ins could also purchase tickets on the door.

“It is a great day out for many people and there is nothing else like it in Barrow,” one man said.

“It is a shame about the weather but I guess that is the chance you take with an outdoor event.

“It is a brilliant opportunity for local music acts to play in front of big crowds as well which is really good as we have some really talented musicians in the area.”

Friday’s event was adults only, and Saturday’s event was open to the whole family to enjoy.

Those attending brought their own chairs, unless they splashed out on a VIP ticket.
