IT is the summer holidays and schoolchildren have been heading to Barrow Raiders’ Craven Park as the club’s community team stage its Cumbria Holiday Activity Programme.

The Advantage! camp started on Monday with kids aged between five and 14 testing out their skills in rugby, cricket as well as ultimate frisbee.

Luckily for them, the camp, which involves coaching from Raiders stars Tee Ritson and Callum Bustin, will be running right through this month, from Mondays to Thursdays, ending on August 26.

Siona Hartley, Barrow Raiders community foundation manager, has said the club’s summer camp has now become a ‘tradition,’ as they look to promote healthy lifestyles amongst children through sport and learning workshops.

Siona said: “It has been a tradition, over the last few years, for Advantage! to run sports and multi-skills camps during the school holidays, and this year is no different.

“Our key objectives for the programme are that the children become more active over the summer holiday, which is particularly important, as we are hopefully coming out of the restrictions of the pandemic.

“We also want to make sure we engage strongly with our local families, so that the children do not see their involvement with Advantage! as a one off, but that they want to get more involved in the other programmes we run all year round, which promote active lifestyles and positive attitudes. We are also grateful to the business community, who have seen the importance of our work, and further supported the programme with funding to buy new equipment, allowing us to offer so many different activities."

This year’s camp is being supported by Cumbria County Council and the Department for Education and is free for children and young people receiving free school meals or £10 per day with a free hot meal provided for all.
