Plans for a new housing estate for Kendal have been changed slightly.

South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) met to consider plans from Story Homes to build close to Brigsteer Road in Kendal.

Originally, there were plans for 89 new homes to go up on the north-western side of town but the number was amended to 88 and will now include a different layout, with the development approved.

Councillors also moved to protect a tree and have it retained when a new footpath is constructed.

The site being constructed by Story Homes will have four houses being sold at a discounted rate to make them affordable and a further five will now be for shared ownership.

The council’s policy is for 35 per cent of housing to be affordable in developments of nine or more homes in the principal/key service centres or three or more dwellings outside of these areas.

However, the developer successfully argued that the development would not be viable with that requirement, so a plan for 20 per cent of the homes - 18 units - to be affordable was agreed.

The plans also show that the new homes will be close to an established local bus service, running to and from the town centre, and operating every hour between Monday and Saturday.

The bus route will also serve Stainbank Road, along with Underwood and Collinfield residential areas, and bus stops are located on Brigsteer Road, approximately 400m from the building site access.

The new properties being built are one, two, three, four, and five-bedroom properties.

According to the UK government, affordable housing should be provided to specified eligible households whose needs are not met by the housing market.
