RATES of people having two jabs in parts of Barrow are up to 20 per cent below the county average.

Efforts are being stepped up to get more people in Cumbria's poorest communities vaccinated against Covid-19 as Public Health data reveals low double vaccination rates.

Across England, more than 46 million people have had a first vaccine dose - nearly 90 per cent of the adult population - and more than 36 million - about 70 per cent of adults - have had both doses.

In Barrow and Furness, NHS data shows 85 per cent of adults in the area have had the first dose of the vaccine - up to July 27 - and 71 per cent have had the second dose.

Areas with the lowest coverage in the borough fall well below the county average of 75 per cent, according to Public Health data up to July 28.

These include residents which have received both vaccinations: Barrow Central at 59.5 per cent, Abbotsmead & Salthouse at 66.3 per cent and Orsmgill & Hindpool where 66.5 per cent of the population have received their vaccination.

Areas with the highest coverage include: Hawcoat & Furness Abbey, with 81.4 per cent of people aged 16 and over fully vaccinated, Roose, 75.9 per cent and Dalton South with 74.5 per cent vaccinated.

Data has also revealed that in Barrow is above the national average in terms of Covid infections.

Tthere has been 410 positive cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 people in the latest week between July 18 and 24.

The average area in England had 351 cases per 100,000 people.
