In 1997 young riders from the Furness Pony Club were celebrating a double success in the area finals of a prestigious national competition.

Top teams from the Ulverston-based club - one senior and one junior - had qualified for the next stage of the Pony Club Mounted Championships, in which they would compete for the coveted Prince Philip Cup.

It was the first time two teams from the Furness Pony Club had got beyond the area finals, which were held in Osbaldeston, in Lancashire.

It meant they could now progress through to the zone finals to be held at the same venue in July that year.

Club trainer Julie Ward said: “It’s really exciting and we are looking forward to the taking part.
