Over the years The Mail has regularly reported on the activities and celebrations of Brownie packs in the Furness area.

In July 1991, members of the 1st Pennington St Michael’s Brownie pack celebrated the 25th anniversary of the pack’s formation at a special party held at Pennington Memorial Hall.

In 1994 St Francis Brownies were all smiles after winning the Ancient Order of Forresters Cup.

The cup was awarded for a collage created to mark 80 years of the Brownie movement.

Seventeen Barrow and District packs competed. The Third Dalton pack was second and the St John’s pack was third.

The St Francis Brownies’ collage depicted two trees and the Brownie promise.

In March 1995 Brownies from the 30th Barrow St Perrans pack could be relied on in an emergency.

For the Brownies had just completed a six-week course to gain their first aid badges.

Areas covered included resuscitation, control of bleeding, recovery position, treatment for shock, burns and scalds and nose bleeds.

They were instructed in the basics by Peter Lorking, demonstrator for the Cumbrian branch of the British Red Cross.

After 13 years as leader of a Walney Brownie pack, Jean Whitbread flew the nest in 1996.

Mrs Whitbread, of Plymouth Street, Walney, attended her last St Mary’s pack meeting as Brown Owl, before moving out of the area later that year.

Mrs Whitbread was presented with a basket of dried flowers and special reminders of her time with the Brownies – two owl ornaments.

The new Brown Owl, Karen Shields, said Mrs Whitbread would be sadly missed.

Rainbow Brownies from all over the Barrow and Walney area got together to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Rainbows in 1997.

Approximately 100 Rainbow Brownies from eight groups congregated at the St Mary’s Parish Centre at Church Walk, Walney.

Trinity Church Rainbows, of Abbey Road, Barrow, designed a banner for the occasion.
