FOOTBALL fever has well and truly swept the nation in recent weeks - and nursery children are showing their own special support for the England team.

The European Championship is the talk of the town across the UK, providing people will a well-needed distraction from the continuing Covid-19 restrictions.

At Hollingarth Day Nursery in Barrow staff in the Robin Classroom have been having a ball celebrating England's most recent win and are looking ahead with anticipation to their next match.

Paige McDermott, from Barrow, is the Robin Class Teacher at Hollingarth Day Nursery.

The 21-year-old said the children have loved spending time outdoors and immersing themselves in a team sport.

She said: "The children and parents have absolutely loved getting involved in our football-themed days and it has been a fantastic way of incorporating exercise and healthy living in our Summer Term's curriculum.

"The children have loved spending time outdoors in the good weather and have really enjoyed the camaraderie of playing sport in a team environment.

"To promote British values in nursery we always encourage taking turns and so everybody has had a go in goals.

"It has truly been wonderful for me as a teacher too as football is one of my passions.

"I have been playing for Morecambe Ladies FC since I was a teenager and can't wait to start up again after Covid-19 restrictions are fully lifted."

Miss McDermott organised the footy days with her wonderful 17-year-old Early Years apprentice Lucy Tomkins.

Miss McDermott said: "Lucy has been teaching the children to dribble the ball and do drills, the children absolutely adore her."

England currently stand two games away from winning the European Championship after beating Ukraine by four goals on Saturday.

The squad is set o face Denmark in the semi-finals today at 8pm.
