IN May 1982, a new timetable for British Rail came under fire from a watchdog group called the Central Transport Consultative Committee.
One of the biggest faults was changes to the timing of daily trains used by 50 pupils heading home from Ulverston Victoria High School to Grange and Cartmel.
In October 1980 it was revealed that there was one railway improvement that the Carnforth to Barrow line would probably never see – electrification. This was a shocker for all.
On November 15 in 1979 The Mail revealed that ticket prices were to rise by around 20 per cent on January 6.
A return from Barrow to Lancaster would £3.38 and Barrow to Preston would be £4.18. Commuters at Millom would pay £1.82 for a return ticket to Barrow.
