In 1991 Furness and District Pony Club achieved success with its team of four riders who qualified to represent Furness in the Strathclyde show jumping event.
Kirstie Keenan, Dawn Baker, Karen Higgs and Mark Hornby competed against 18 other teams to gain a creditable third place in the show jumping section.
They also won a well-deserved first place for the best turned out team of riders and their ponies.
A pony that earned its keep giving rides to holidaymakers swept the board at the national fell pony championships in 1993.
Hesket Topper, from Flookburgh, was overall winner of the Fell Pony Society's spring performance trials and took the individual dressage prize as well.
His rider, Kim Burrow, from Staveley, won the best newcomer award.
The one-day event, held at Hexham, drew entries from all over the country.
The dressage judges said Topper was 'a pleasure to watch'.
Topper earned his living at the Lakeland Trekking Centre at Flookburgh.
His owner, Sheelagh Myers, said: "I wonder how many of the people who come here for a ride realise they may be mounted on the best fell pony in the country."
Kim Burrow, who was an instructor at the centre, was one of Cumbria's top event riders and had competed with the junior Great Britain team.
In 1993 plucky riders from the Furness Pony Club reached the regional finals of the Prince Philip Cup before just missing out on a dream appearance at Wembley.
Glenys Dodd, district commissioner of the Pony Club, said that the Under 12s had done really well to make it as far as they did.
They beat around ten other teams from all over the North to get to the regional finals.
At the finals competition they came sixth out of 12 teams but they won the best turned out team award at both events.
