THE future of the armed services is being supported by Barrow borough council as the licensing committee gets behind a proposed charity street collection for the combined cadet forces.

Dalton Road will now play host to a street collection by the Barrow Sea and Air cadets and the Cumbria Army cadets as they raise funds during the annual street soap back challenge race around town.

BAE Systems are the main sponsors of the Soapbox challenge and have chosen the cadets as their charity on the day.

The soapbox challenge was confirmed this week to be taking place once again, having missed a year in the pandemic and will feature teams racing a circuit around the town centre in crates and buggies built by teams taking part.

There will be 20 collectors out on Dalton Road, between Harrison Street and Abbey road carrying collection boxes for your donations.

The committee unanimously granted the license for street collections for the cadets between 9 am and 6 pm on Sunday 29th August 2021

Aaron O'Roarty, Squadron leader from RAFAC-NORTH-MCO said: “Our cadets are luckier than most as the RAF provide the money for uniforms, premises, flying, and several other activities. Each cadet provides a small subscription which goes towards funding the many activities that they undertake. The squadron must provide the rest of the required funding, primarily through the fundraising events and efforts of the civilian committee each year."

Anyone wishing to organise a street fundraising collection outside of a Friday or a Saturday must first approach Barrow borough council's licensing committee for permission to do so on Sunday through to Thursdays.

So far the committee has granted two other street collection licences out of 50 available.
