Barrow and Furness MP Simon Fell called for an ‘urgent review of safety measures’ after the death of a man on the A590.

A 68-year-old man died following a single vehicle collision on the A590 at Newby Bridge.

Police were called to the incident on Saturday afternoon after a Jeep Grand Cherokee was involved in an incident.

They have now confirmed, despite medical intervention, the driver of the vehicle, Peter Jones, 68, from Bolton, Greater Manchester was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger, a woman in her 60s, was uninjured.

The incident has sparked a call for a review by Mr Fell, who labelled the situation ‘terrible’.

He said: “This is just a terrible story and what makes it worse is how avoidable accidents like these are.

“Just before the pandemic we held a public meeting at The Rusland Pool with members of the community, Highways England, and Cumbria County Council where this spot was highlighted as a specific concern. “In light of this tragic incident I’ve written to them both asking for an urgent review of safety measures at the spot.”

Cumbria County Councillor Sue Sanderson said: “I’m really sorry to hear about the person who had passed away.

“Our parish council, myself and Staveley parish council meet regularly with Highways England about safety on the A590.

“It’s got so many junctions, they wouldn’t build a road like that in the modern times and its geography is particularly difficult because of the bends and narrow bits and dual carriageway to single and back to dual carriageway.

“That’s a recipe for disaster on most roads.”

A spokesman for Highways England said: “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by Saturday’s incident.

“While there is an ongoing police investigation it would be inappropriate for us to comment on this particular case.

“The safety of all road users is important to us and we routinely monitor the operation of the strategic road network to ensure it is operating as safely as possible.”
