PLANS have been submitted for a new betting shop in Barrow.

Coral has applied to take over the old Carphone Wherehouse shop in Dalton road.

The plans by Coral, propose a new shop front sign and the addition of a satellite dish on the existing flat roof on 140 to 142 Dalton road.

The company plans to show sporting fixtures including from abroad and will be manned by two members of staff.

The site is currently unused, and has been the home of retail companies in the past, most recently by Carphone Warehouse, which moved to another location in the town.

The application is for a change of use to betting and gambling. A report commissioned by ESA retail shows a high footfall by the public in this particular location.

The plans also show multiple facilities, including seated gambling areas with terminals and computer screens and larger flat screen televisions; for standing and viewing. A public toilet also makes up the facilities that the company wants to offer.

The company is best known for its high street betting shops employing nearly 17 thousand people and had a net income in 2016 of over £204 million.

Coral was invited to comment on its plans to open the new betting shop but declined to do so.

The companies website states: “In our shops we operate a think 21 policy and those customers who appear to be under the age of 21 will be asked to produce photographic confirmation of their age.”

So far there have been no letters of objection sent to Barrow Borough Council.

The independent charity The National Gambling Helpline,’ was asked its view on another betting shop opening in Barrow. A spokesperson said: “ We cannot comment on specific shops or locations, but can offer free advice and confidential help and support to anyone who’s worried about their gambling, or that of anyone else by calling 0808 8020 133."

The shop will be in competition with William Hill in Church Street and Betfred in Cavendish Street.
