PLANS have been put forward to convert a former phone shop in Barrow into a betting store.

Coral Racing Ltd has submitted a proposal to Barrow Borough Council to convert the vacant Carphone Warehouse unit in Dalton Road.

The unit has remained empty since March this year.

The shop has two floors, with the ground floor available as a self-contained unit, according to a listing by the property agents.

The proposal also seeks permission for a new shopfront together with the installation of two air conditioning units and satellite dishes on the roof.

The application seeks to facilitate the relocation of both the existing Coral betting offices, located in Dalton Road and Crellin Street, in the town centre into one larger, more central facility.

The design and access statement states: "The internal space in both existing units is cramped and fails to provide the standard of accommodation expected by both customers and staff."

According to the plans the betting shop will 'bring a diversity of uses' and 'attract people to the town centre'.

It states: "The proposed use will also add to the evening trade offer, and satisfy the vision for Barrow which seeks to support a variety of uses."
