AS we celebrate on the 50th year celebration of our popular market, we have looked back in our archives for a peak into the past.
Here are some of our favourite pictures from the last five decades of the Barrow Market place.
Since its opening in 1971, the market has seen no shortage of characters, and some very memorable people of business.
Mrs Barbara Williams worked on Trevor's Shoe stall and had been part of the the new market hall since it originally opened in 1971.
She was featured in one of our articles in 1997 where she showed off some of her merchandise.
Another well known figure was Jimmy Ferguson, a market trader who was known to advertise his goods during the 1980s by ringing a bell.
In 1993 Odette’s hairdressers in Market Street, Dalton, won the best-dressed shop window for the festive period.
The Christmas period never failed to be a busy time for business. As the decorations came out and the presents were on display the entire town turned up for their Christmas shopping at their local market. Once described a local councillor as 'like a scene from festival film'.
