THE spotlight was firmly on Burlington School at Kirkby-in-Furness when a feast of fashion, music and dancing delighted audiences in 1995.

The school came up with the idea of a fashion show to raise money for the Friends of Burlington.

And children, parents and teachers all pulled together to make it a great success.

More than 35 pupils and adults took part on the fashion show, sporting the latest clothes to an appreciative audience.

Secretary of the Friends of Burlington Fiona Roberts said the children, who were aged between four and 12, had a brilliant time preparing for the show, dressing up and taking part in the colourful event.

“It was really enjoyable for the children and for the audience of mainly parents and governors,” said Fiona.

Her two daughters, Catriona and Rebecca, were models in the show.

More than £80 was raised for the friends by the event, which included a raffle and wine for adults.

In 1997 children at the school were given a view of life in Japan, thanks to a special visitor.

Masae Kitagawa, 28, from Japan, started working with the children in April after getting a placement in Britain on the international internship programme.

She had used her months at Kirkby to improve her English, while also providing insights into Japanese life.

Pupils displayed the work they had done with Ms Kitigawa - including calligraphy, origami and Japanese songs and dancing - at an open day.

The children would also be putting on a Christmas play based on a Japanese folk tale.

Head teacher Barbara Berry said: "The children have taken to her very well indeed. She is very warm and friendly and very good with the children.

"A good thing is that it doesn't actually cost the school anything.

"Masae had to find a host family, but once that was sorted, we didn't have to pay anything."
