SEASONAL beach cleaners are back in action as the sun brings more visitors to the county’s sandy shores.

Each year Copeland Borough Council employs two officers specifically to clean and oversee the four managed beaches at Silectoft, Haverigg, Seascale and St Bees.

Beach-goers could well see the pair, John Harris and Jon Beech, emptying bins, monitoring recycling sites, picking litter or maintaining safety equipment.

John Harris covers the council’s two most southern amenity beaches – Silecroft and Haverigg. He is a well-known face, having covered the seasonal roles for several summers.

Jon Beech, who covers Seascale and St Bees, is new to the position and likes the fact that the role is almost entirely outdoors.

He said: “I love this area and I love being outside.”

Councillor Steven Morgan, Copeland’s portfolio holder for cleansing, said: “It’s great to see so many people making the most of our lovely beaches and the warmer weather. John and Jon are doing a fantastic job, but I would also add that people can help us – and the environment – by doing their bit too.

“Please don’t drop litter, and take your rubbish away if a bin is full, so that everyone can enjoy the coast safely.”
