Yarlside Academy’s Year 2 class have taken a trip back in time as part of their history topic, where they were looking at Barrow's past.

The class was guided by a Furness Abbey monk who gave them a tour of the Abbey, explaining what it was like to be a monk and what happened in each of the buildings.

Year 2 teacher Kishanda Blake said: “This has been their first trip since reception, and they had a wonderful time on such a sunny day.

“The tour guide was great. He provided them with some really interesting information like what it was like being a monk, and it was just lovely to see them outside class and how what they’ve learnt indoors links to what they were finding out on site.”

“They’ve been learning about local history in their lessons and obviously Furness Abbey is a big part of Barrow’s history. They really loved it!”

Mrs Blake and her class followed their trip to Furness Abbey with a visit to Dalton Castle and Roa Island to take a look at Piel Castle, ending their history lesson with lots of smiles and heads exploding with new knowledge.

Mrs Blake says the children's trips, organised with Fussell’s Travel Services, already include another planned for the upcoming Monday to Coniston for the class's geography lessons.
