A FUN-filled project has begun in a pocket of Barrow where, with the help of children and adults in the area, Ormsgill Community Garden is coming to life.

Overseen by Ormsgill Stronger Together, a team of residents who are striving to create a brighter future for the area, the gardening project is well underway.

Those who joined in have given lots of ideas for how they think the garden should take shape.

Some of those ideas include adding wind chimes, a scarecrow, a mushroom table and even a little pond.

A spokeswoman for Ormsgill Stronger Together said: “We did this event on the Friday just gone with Barra Culture and it was a really good turnout.

“We have had lots of support from the county council and the borough council, Barra Culture and Zest – so many people.

“Everyone has taken an interest in the garden and has ownership in it.

“They really want this to work and lots of people are looking at it thinking ‘well that’s our bit of garden, we’re going to work on something here’.”

Despite a small blip where three young teenagers emptied out a full ton bag of rubbish, dragged another one down the alley and threw rubbish back into the garden, the team are assuring people that it was just “bored teenagers” which has inspired the community to back it even more.

The spokeswoman said: “The community have been rallying even more together.

“The whole thing is the community being stronger together.

“It’s a really good place to live!”

Ormsgill councillor Bill McEwan said he was really pleased with the project.

He said: “There’s a little piece of land owned by Barrow Borough Council and it was fenced off and gated because people were throwing rubbish over.

“Ormsgill Stronger Together thought why don’t we use that land for the community and for children to get involved in it, which they did on Friday when they did a big clear-out of it.

“I asked Zest to come along and they helped clean it all out for us and did a wonderful job. So a big thanks to them, and thank you to Barra Culture for their involvement too.

“I think it’s wonderful for the community and it gives them something to look after – it belongs to them. It’s nice to put community spirit back into the community again.

“After it was all done, three teens put rubbish all back in it after the kids and parents had done all the work on it. They are doing this for the community and we don’t need people like that.

“But it is a wonderful idea and I’m looking forward to getting down there as much as I can with the children and everybody involved.

“If we can keep it going, especially with the summer holidays coming up, we can get even more done.”
