A FARMER is looking for compensation after being flooded with 'raw sewage' for a number of years.

Craig Rothery owns a farm on Mainsgate Road, Millom and has blasted the current sewage system in the area.

Mr Rothery said: "It has been an ongoing issue for six years.

"The pumps are not adequate enough, they flood the road and flood my land too.

"It is raw sewage and is affecting about half an acre of land.

"It absolutely stinks and is an environmental hazard as well.

"I grow grass on that land which can be made into horse hay, but I can't make anything from it."

Mr Rothery is now calling for an urgent improvement, but revealed he is not feeling very confident.

"I have spoken to the council and I have tried to speak to the manager of the caravan site about it, but I have not had a lot of joy out of them," he said.

"I do not have a lot of hope.

"There needs to be two pumps that are serviced regularly.

"I would also like my land cleaned and some sort of reimbursement for the damage this has caused."

However, Mr Rothery has warned that any improvement needs to last.

"It can’t be a short-term fix," he began.

"They will come back and say it is all fixed, but we have gone down this road before and it will start flooding again."

Millom Town Council Councillor Bob Kelly is hopeful the issue can be resolved.

Cllr Kelly said: "The reports are worrying that there has been a leakage of some sort.

"Every authority will now look to get to the bottom of this issue and ensure it doesn’t happen again."

Millom Town Council say they have alerted Copeland Borough Council's Environmental Health Team.
