A TOUCH of magic has been brought into a care home.

Residents of St George’s Residential Care Home in Millom have been putting technology to the test with the introduction of the Magic Table 360 and the Happiness Programme.

The technology uses interactive light projections to bring together residents and staff with fun games and activities.

Manager Nicola Smith said: “It has been very difficult during Covid with not having visitors, and we would normally tend to go out for our activities or have people come into the home like the Owl Sanctuary and Little Beasties, and with things like that not able to happen it has been quite difficult trying to create different activities.

“The magic table has got lots of advantages. For a change we have actually got quite a few gentlemen in. Normally in care homes there are usually a lot more females. Quite a lot of the activities can be crafting and things like that which doesn’t always appeal to the gentlemen, but this has got football on it and they don’t even have to get out of the chair.

“Several people can take part at once and it has lots of different activities on it.

“We are going to be getting some props to go with it because there’s a great one with fishes and you can use a fishing net to catch the virtual fish.”

The technology is also great for those who are unable to leave their bed, with the projections able to be placed on their ceilings.

It can play them calming music and simulate twinkling stars.

Nicola added: “There can be up to four people playing at one time so it creates a conversation as well. You can do puzzles and play piano, it is fantastic.

“It’s going down a storm at the moment. I think technology is the way forward.

“We want to try new things with the residents and move forward rather than sticking to the same old, same old.”
