THE impending closure of a popular jewellery store has been described as a 'worrying trend' in the town centre.

Concern has been raised after bosses at Pandora in Portland Walk announced the store will shut next month after five years of trading in Barrow town centre.

In a post shared online, the chain announced that it will close its doors on Wednesday June 30 after opening to the public in 2016.

A spokesman said: "It is with regret to inform all of our customers that as of Wednesday June 30 we will be closing our doors.

"We have loved serving you all since we opened in 2016 and hope to see you in the coming weeks before we close.

"Please during this time respect the hard working staff still here to serve you with all your jewellery needs.

"Thanks from all of us, PANDORA Barrow."

Following the closure of another shop in the town, Barrow Borough Council's deputy leader Lee Roberts, said this is an 'ongoing issue' for high streets across the country.

He said: "This is an ongoing issue for the high street which is struggling in Barrow like it is in other places.

"I remember people were really excited about the opening of Pandora so it's a real shame for it to close."

Cllr Roberts said Barrow needs to revitalise its town centre to attract more people to its shops.

He said: "We need to rethink what we're doing to attract more people into the town centre and spend time there rather than just pop and shop.

"More green spaces, better access and fun things to do will all encourage more people to shop in the town.

"All these shops closing is a worrying trend and it's sad to see Pandora go. I hope we hold onto our existing retailers to try and reshape the town centre into something people want. To revitalise the town centre, we have to offer something different like communal green spaces to lure people into town rather than just shopping for brands."

Pandora is the fifth shop in Portland Walk to close its doors within the past year, after Debenhams, River Island, Topshop and Thorntons.
