THE GOLDEN sands of Askam are glowing in a music video created to accompany a sea shanty written by a local artist.

Musician Mary Dunford, who goes by the artist name of EmKayDeeBee, created the catchy song 'In Words Drown I' and filmed a breathtaking music video as part of an international song writing contest.

She said: “I was taking part in a song writing competition based in America, there are four rounds, and every round we got a different challenge - and this was my entry for round three. I made it through the first few rounds, but sadly didn’t make it through to the fourth - it was a bit of a killer round because they took it down from 14 to the final four.

The challenge for round three was to use as many palindromes as possible. Palindromes are words, phrases, or sequences that reads the same backwards and forwards.

She said: “I wrote about four songs before I really settled into it. It made me sort of go, a sea shanty, it has to be done. It was just really good fun to play around with all that, and then discovered it’s actually quite catchy and really works."

The music video was put together with help from her husband and two children, who can be seen dancing along in the video.

The 41-year-old musician who makes a living through teaching and playing, as well as being a musician in healthcare, said: “I live in Askam. That evening it was a really gorgeous warm evening so we just walked from my house with a harp on my back and a violin and my husband who works for Signal Film and Media brought a bit of kit and we went down and had good fun.

“Once you are off the end of the pier, you could almost be anywhere. It’s really lovely, you can see some houses in some of the shots but there’s that gorgeous bank of sand.”

EmKayDeeBee collaborated with American musician ZeCoop, who also played drums in the song. To watch the video, visit: https://tinyurl.com/5xp9y49w
