PEOPLE across Furness can look forward to a fun-filled summer in the outdoors this year, with a host of activities available for keen adventurers to throw themselves into.

The Furness peninsular is known for its stunning coastline which is why so many people immerse themselves in the South Cumbrian outdoors.

If you’re looking for some outdoor fun in the Furness area, the first place on most people’s list is South Lakes Safari Zoo.

Home to more than 1,000 of the rarest and most endangered animals in the world, get as close as physically possible to experience the amazing creatures first hand.

For those who want to get out at the sea, and perhaps spot a glimpse of a seal or two, a trip across to Piel Island is the perfect daytime excursion.

The hugely popular Piel Island ferry service officially resumed its service on May 17 after the Covid-19 pandemic forced its temporary suspension.

The prospect of seeing seals just a few metres away from the boat makes the trips understandably popular with families. Grey seals can be spotted in the water around the nature reserve, usually at high tide. At low tide, the seals haul out in large numbers on ‘the spit’ at the end of the nature reserve.

Whilst you’re in the area, why not visit South Walney Nature Reserve? With stunning views across Morecambe bay, this shingle island reserve is full of interest and a fantastic place for bird watching.

The magnificent Furness Abbey is open every day to the public, and is perfect for those interested in learning about the history of the Furness area.

Set in the picturesque ‘Vale of the Deadly Nightshade’, Furness Abbey was once the second largest Cistercian Monastery in the country. Today the imposing Abbey stands in spectacular ruin along the ‘Cistercian Way’.

The site has been celebrated for it’s beauty and visitors are left in awe at the peace, tranquillity and ambiance of this magnificent hidden gem.

After this, if you’re fancying a hike, the views of the Hoad in Ulverston are incomparable for a view across Morecambe Bay.

And finally, in the warmer weather, there’s nothing quite like a traditional homemade ice cream, and Cumbria Cow has you covered. Enjoy a delicious ice cream, milkshake, waffle, sundae or cake in the glorious Ulverston sunshine.
