THE behaviour of a passenger who was caught completely naked on a train - except for a pair of trainers - has been branded 'unacceptable'.

A man was slapped with a fine after British Transport Police caught the passenger on a train at Lancaster without any clothes on apart from his trainers.

The 35-year-old man from Barrow was caught naked in September last year, and British Transport Police said alcohol was a factor.

He was convicted of a public order offence and handed an £80 fine, £119 costs and surcharge.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "In September last year officers dealt with a 35-year old man from Barrow, who was completely naked (except for a pair of trainers), on a train at Lancaster.

"Alcohol was a factor.

"He has now been convicted of a public order offence: £80 fine plus £119 costs and a surcharge."

Robert Parker, of Furness Line Action Group, said this sort of behaviour is 'unacceptable' anywhere in public.

He said: "Unfortunately this sort of behaviour happens regularly.

"It doesn't just happen on trains but on buses, in the street and other public places.

"If this happened in any of those places too, the person would have been fined."

Mr Parker said Barrow station has measures in place to prevent drunk passengers from boarding trains.

He said: "At Barrow station, in theory they have a person manning the gates stopping people from getting on who appear inebriated.

"But on this occasion, the man could've began drinking after going through the gates or wasn't sufficiently inebriated to raise concern."

Mr Parker said issuing penalty fines is the 'right thing' to stamp out this sort of behaviour.

"It was absolutely the right thing to do to issue this person a fine," he said.

"It's irresponsible and unacceptable to behave this way on any form of public transport.

"This person committed an offence so should have to face the penalty."
