CORONAVIRUS has increased in Cumbria according to official figures.

Eight more people have been recorded as contracting the virus over the past day.

Public Health England figures show that 28,140 people had been confirmed as testing positive for virus as of 9am on April 22. This has gone up from 28,132 the same time on Wednesday.

The rate of infection in Cumbria now stands at 5,628 cases per 100,000 people, lower than the England average of 6,828.

Across the UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 2,728 over the period, to 4,398,431.

Cumbria's cases were among the 604,779 recorded across the North West, a figure which rose by 300 over the period. These include patients who are currently unwell, have recovered and those that have died.

The vaccination program has currently seen 33 million people get their first dose, with 11 million being fully vaccinated.
