BARROW’S MP says he is supporting possible changes to the law that could see killer drivers jailed for life after the sentence handed down to Dalton’s David Logan sparked outrage.

Simon Fell said he was ‘shocked’ at the 10-year and 10-month jail sentence given to the motorist who killed a dad, two children and the family dog while under the influence.

A Bill is passing through Parliament that could see harsher sentences for those convicted of causing death by dangerous driving, like Logan, 48.

He was sentenced at Preston Crown Court this week after he previously admitted causing the deaths of dad Joshua James Flynn, his children Skylar Flynn and Coby-Jay Flynn and their pet dog Troy.

More than 1,200 people have signed an online petition calling the sentence an ‘absolute disgrace’.

The Sentencing Council has pointed to guidelines that state Logan could have been jailed for 14 years maximum. He would have been afforded credit for pleading guilty to the charges he faced; three counts of causing death by dangerous driving, drink driving and criminal damage.

The family members were killed while out on a Father’s Day walk near Dalton in June last year.

Mr Fell said he would make community concerns clear in Parliament over the issue

“I know that I wasn’t the only one that was shocked by apparent leniency of the sentence handed down in this case,” he said.

“Punishments must fit the crime and so I’m glad that the Government is bringing forward legislation to introduce life sentences for dangerous drivers who kill on our roads and to ensure that they feel the full force of the law.

“I’ll be sure to make sure that the Lord Chancellor understands the strength of community feeling on this as the Bill is debated.”
