CUMBRIA County Council has issued a plea to residents to stay safe and stick to coronavirus regulations when paying respects to the Duke of Edinburgh.

Prince Philip will be laid to rest today following his death last Friday at the age of 99.

But the county council is urging people paying tribute to the Duke to stick to the current coronavirus restrictions.

A spokesman for the county council said: "We understand that people would like to pay their respects to The Duke of Edinburgh.

"Please do so safely within the COVID-19 guidelines and don’t attend large gatherings or make unnecessary journeys."

The council is also encouraging people to share their messages of condolence online.

Anyone wishing to do this can do so by visiting www.royal.uk. The funeral service will begin at 3pm today. The Duke will be laid to rest at the Royal Vault at St George's Chapel.
