Vandalism at a former residential home on Walney has been condemned by a community leader.

Police have been contacted on three separate occasions between Tuesday and Thursday about anti-social behaviour and criminal damage to Combe House on Central Drive.

According to Cumbria Constabulary the reports are of youths entering the property and throwing rocks. Windows have been damaged during the incidents.

Pictures of the vandalism have been put out by Walney Central Nursery, which neighbours the site, in a bid to inform parents of what some children are up to.

A spokeswoman for the nursery said: "We wanted to inform parents that this is happening and to make sure that they are aware of the situation.

"From the front of the site you cannot see any damage and that is why we have put up the pictures because we felt as though people in the area should be aware and they can explain to their children why this vandalism is not okay.

"We just want to make sure that the children our safe and that is why we want to highlight this issue as they are our main concern here."

Esteem Homes, which manages the site and is hoping to gain planning permission for development there, has said it is sending workers to board up the building and secure it from future vandalism.

The area is fenced off, but the nursery staff believe youths spotted on their CCTV accessed the site via a back route.

Des Barlow, councillor for North Walney, said: "That used to be a Cumbria County Council site, but it has been closed down now.

"There should not be any vandalism at all in the area, I think.

"I am just a bit disgusted with people that go around vandalising property.

"I don't think people who have put money into places deserve this to happen to their property. I am just so annoyed I am lost for words.

"I just hope that this is an isolated incident. The building looks like there is nobody there and maybe they thought it was an ideal opportunity."
