MAGISTRATES jailed a shoplifter who failed to comply with a court order.

Denise Elizabeth Brill-Edwards was jailed for 10 days after she failed to meet the requirements of a curfew imposed for stealing a number of items from shops.

The 44-year-old admitted the breach when she appeared before the bench at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court.

The Ulverston woman had been ordered to complete a 10-week curfew keeping her at home between 8pm and 6am in January. It came after she stole £100 worth cosmetics and gift sets from Boots in Ulverston in December as well as other products from stores in Kendal.

But the probation service said Brill-Edwards had been absent from her home on a number of occasions.

She was not there between on March 17 between 9.30pm and around 11pm, on March 19 from 8pm to 6am and the same time the two days after.

In total she was said to have been absent from her curfew for more than 21 hours.

The court chose to revoke the community order previously handed down and jail her.

Brill-Edwards, of Little Union Street, was warned by district judge John Temperley not to reoffend when she was in court previously.

“It is surprising to me that you would be so foolish as to commit so many offences in such a short period of time,” he said at the time.

“However, I am not going to send you into custody today, but you need to be aware that if this continues I may have to deal with this by way of custody.”

As well as stealing from Boots, she admitted that she stole meats products worth £65 from the Co-op in Ulverston on November 30. She also pleaded guilty to stealing more than £258 worth of alcohol products from Booths in Kendal.

In addition she admitted stealing perfume and gift sets and attempting to steal the same products from Boots on the same day.

The items Brill-Edwards stole came to £623, the court heard at the time.

Her solicitor Andrew Gallagher said Brill-Edwards was facing hardship at the time of the offences in the lead-up to Christmas and visiting foodbanks.

“She wanted to provide Christmas presents for her children but simply did not have the money to do that,” he said.
