We’ve gone back in time more than 50 years this week for our nostalgic look through our archives.

1970 – a momentous year as the age of majority was reduced from to 18; the half crown and 10 shilling note ceased to be legal tender and the National Westminster Bank began trading following a merger of National Provincial and Westminster Banks.

Bridge Over Troubled Water, by Simon and Garfunkel, was at number one along with Back Home, sung by the England World Cup Squad. The latter proved sadly prophetic as England’s defence of the World Cup ended when they lost 3-2 to West Germany in Mexico. Back in Carlisle, football had a much more grassroots feel!

And finally, we see several personality contests which were all the rage back in 1970 in Carlisle and further afield, it seems. Youth clubs also keep the youngsters of Cumbria entertained, with these pictures likely to bring back happy memories.
