SCOUTS from the St Mary’s Walney troop scooped the pool for Barrow in 1994.

The youngsters, who would represent Cumbria in a regional competition after beating off the opposition for the County Patrol Challenge Cup, were the first Scouts from Barrow to win the trophy.

The Scouts had won the cup after taking part in a variety of indoor and outdoor challenges, each scoring marks out of 30.

Scoutmaster Clive Roddy said: “Our patrol is the first Barrow district team to represent the county in the eight years of the competition.”

The next step forward for the five boys and one girl was the Regional Patrol Challenge in Ormskirk.

It was the latest success for the 37 Scouts in St Mary’s troop, which had recently won the Barrow district first aid competition for the second consecutive year.

For the Eighth Barrow St Mary’s Scouts Group it wasn’t so much a case of dib, dib, dib as dig, dig, dig as the troop did its bit for BT’s Environment Week in 1995.
