A BARROW man has been praised by his neighbour for the ‘back-breaking’ work he put in for his street and for the benefit of his community.

Tony Barry has become the latest recipient of the Barrow Borough Council’s Housing Department’s Good Neighbour ‘Thank You’.

The Hayes garden centre worker was nominated by Gwen Fallon, who recognised the work that Tony had done for the street including cleaning, littering picking and hedge trimming.

Gwen said: “During the pandemic, Tony has worked hard regularly picking up rubbish and cleaning the area.

“He did back-breaking work to clean the verge in Bank Lane, cut back the hedging, and planted banks of daffodils which are now blooming and looking beautiful.

“Well done, Tony, definitely well deserved for the hard work you have been doing.”

In addition to the Neighbourhood Thank You, he also received additional vouchers from the council for his work.

The council awarded him £30 of Love2Shop vouchers in recognition of his fantastic work.

Head of the Housing Service, Janice Sharp, said: “A huge thanks to Tony for going above and beyond to improve this area of Ormsgill for the benefit of others in the community.

“It really does look wonderful”.

Tony’s story will also be featured in Barrow’s summer edition of Housing Matters.

He received many messages of support and gratitude on social media for his nomination.

Labour Councillor for Barrow Borough Council Beverly Morgan commented: “Well deserved Tony. Thank you.”

Cumbria Councillor for Ormsgill Bill McEwan also commented a message of gratitude for Tony’s actions.
