A town rugby league club hopes to boost its matchday offering – with a view to becoming a more sustainable club post-lockdown.

A notice of application has gone in for Dalton ARLFC's ground in Ulverston Road to be allowed to serve drinks and food on matchdays.

Club secretary Ian Broaden said it was all part of bigger plans for the club.

"We have now got a good facility for our after-match refreshments in portacabins temporarily, but we want to become self-sufficient as best we can, so we can generate some money from the ground," he said.

"We wanted to improve things for our after-match refreshments.

"In previous years we went to the Bridge or the Clarence in Dalton so away teams in the North West Men’s League can soon enjoy our hospitality.

"We aim to go up to the National Conference League so this will help in our bid.

"To that end, we want to make sure facilities are up to scratch.

"So, visiting teams can enjoy the facilities they expect.

"The club premises certificate notice is up until April 12 when a decision will be made.

"On the back of this, we will look for improvements and grants for the club.

"So, it’s a natural progression for our club. "

A notice on the club gates reads: "Notice is hereby given that Dalton ARLFC has applied to Barrow Council for a club premises certificate for Dalton Rugby Club, Ulverston Road, Dalton-in-Furness, LA15 8HB."
