A treasure hunter is set to launch his first book revealing his best finds and top tips for budding metal detectorists.
Graeme Rushton, who runs Unearthed UK in Dalton, has seen some of his finds including incredibly rare medieval coins sell for thousands of pounds at auction.
The hobby is seeing a surge in popularity recently and Graeme hopes to give people an insight into life on the trawl for buried treasure.
“This was supposed to be released last year but due to Covid it was held back,” the 51-year-old said.
“So, now it is due to be released on June 30.
“The idea came out of the blue really a couple of years ago when a publisher asked if I wanted to do it and I agreed.
“I have been detecting since I was a child, so the information was readily available in my head but the challenge was getting it down on paper.
“The start of the book was quite straightforward but after about 10,000 words I started to get writing blocks.
“Once I got out of bed in the middle of the night because something had come into my mind to write.
“Some of the best parts are from when I did this actually.
“I am really pleased and excited about this.”
The book, A Guide to Metal Detecting, does what it says on the tin and more as it will include some of Graeme’s personal triumphs such as finding a Saxon gold pendant and much more.
“This is such an accomplishment for me as I never thought I would do this because I left school with very little in terms of qualifications; I had to go back to college as an adult to get them,” he said.
“I am just really looking forward to seeing how it is received by the public.
"There has been a popularity surge in metal detecting in the last 10 years and if I can reach out and give tips and the dos and don’ts then that is great.”
He has recently appeared on the pilot episode of ITV4’s Henry Cole’s Great British Treasure Hunt, which he hopes will get the green light for a series in the near future.
