A STATE-of-the-art play park which has undergone a £200,000 transformation is nearing completion.

The final touches are being made on St George's Road Park in Millom after two months of construction work.

The park, which received £200,000 of funding from Copeland Council, includes climbing towers and slides, group swings and spinning equipment to entertain the children of Millom for years to come.

Simon Donnelly, a Millom Town councillor, said it had been a 'long process' but the results looked 'amazing'.

"Watching the children's play area grow day by day is great for the kids of the town," he said.

"I know there are a lot of children chomping at the bit to play on it and I cant wait to see them all over it.

"For a lot of families and children this last year has been awful so won't it be fabulous for them to have somewhere on their own doorstep to go, play and relax.

"I personally know how hard I've found it as a parent trying to find somewhere local to take my children for exercise or run about. Not all children want to go for a long walk but most will jump at the chance to play on a park.

"This gives the parents a little break whilst there children play in a safe environment.

"I just hope that we can have a big open day if the restrictions allow it."

An official opening date for the park is yet to be confirmed, but the council is already busy planning its next project.

Cllr Donnelly said: "Our next project is to build a skate park and maybe a pump track in Haverigg.

"Again it's a slow process but with skateboarding now becoming an Olympic sport it's an opportunity to get ahead of the game and offer people other local amenities."
