READERS have reacted to plans to introduce car exclusion zones around some schools.

The new initiative, called 'school streets,' will see six schools in the county try the parking scheme, including Askam Village School.

The school will be the first in the area to trial the regime, with no cars allowed to park outside at key times.

Liz Gaskell said: "Nice to see Askam being put first for once. This is very much needed and I expect had it become a council decision Askam would have been bottom of the list,"

Steven Forster Driver said: "Brilliant news but I'm worried about the build up of traffic outside the bungalows, it’s bad enough now."

Antony Statham said: "Cars will just move somewhere else surely?"

Christina Howker said: "Hard to know what to think of the idea without details of how far the exclusion zone goes.

"Are special provisions being made for disabled parents , carer's & pupils?

"Is there flexibility on drop off times to allow parents to get to work?

"It's very tempting to blame 'lazy parents' but I don't think you can solve the problem without addressing genuine obstacles that do exist for some.

"In terms of consultation, it does seem that this could have been better discussed with other councillors before hand."

Sam Epsworth said: "Good idea, but the nearby streets will have to be resident only and strictly enforced. I live within 100m of a school and getting parked near my house is a nightmare during school times, what are we going to do in 10 years' time when petrol cars are phased out?"
