THE issue of potholes on Walney has been raised by a resident in the area who believes it is “only a matter of time” before someone is injured as a result.

Thorney Nook Lane is exposed to wind, rain and flooding which ultimately increases the likelihood of potholes on the road, and it is becoming a danger to pedestrians and horses according to one resident.

Maria Guselli said: “They are really bad and so many horse riders and pedestrians and cyclists go up there.

“It is only a matter of time before someone or a horse is injured if they fall in these potholes.”

Cumbria County Council have been alerted to the issue.

A spokesman said: “The team from Cumbria Highways are working on a schedule of potholes on roads across the county, including Walney.”

South Walney county councillor Frank Cassidy inspected the flooding along with Cumbria Highways network officers.

Cllr Cassidy said: “Flooding has been a problem here for many years. This has in turn damaged the road surface and the county council intends to take action to resolve this.

“Arrangements have been made for the lane to be swept on Monday. That should clear the standing water and tidy things up.

“Beyond that a geographic survey of the area will be carried out. Once that’s completed highways officers will put together a plan to address the issues. It’s too early to say what form the plan will take, but it won’t just be a sticking plaster. So we will wait for the outcome of the survey before moving to the next stage.”
