A POLICE probe is under way after a dog walker found suspected human remains.
Officers are looking into the discovery of a skull found by the walker on Saturday.
The item, which was found near the Duddon Estuary at Soutergate in Kirkby, was recovered by police and taken for analysis.
Police were called to the find at around 2pm on Saturday.
Investigations will now be carried out to confirm whether the bones are in fact human remains.
A police spokeswoman said: "Should the article be confirmed as human remains, further enquiries will be conducted to establish the exact age of the bones; which could be over 100 years old.
"The discovery is not being treated as suspicious at this stage."
