A SUCCESSFUL Barrow-based addiction rehabilitation service is set to provide more live-in support to the people of south Cumbria following news it has signed a lease for a new centre.

The Well, which has an accommodation centre in Barrow, is looking to reach out to the rest of south Cumbria with a new 12-bed centre based at Highgate House in Kendal town centre.

The community-driven service give support to people recovering from drug and alcohol addiction through therapy, counselling, peer mentoring, employment training and social activities.

Founder of The Well, David Higham, explained that current member of their community programme have been hard at work getting the place set up and ready for those in South Lakeland that need their help.

“We have just signed the lease for our 12-bed accommodation in Kendal, this is due to the increasing need in the area,” he said.

“We have had amazing support from South Lakeland District Council and charities in the area. There has been an amazing community response from Kendal as well.

“We have the idea of supporting people across Cumbria in the near future as people are screaming out for LEROs (Lived Experience Recovery Organisations).

“We are just an example of what people can achieve and we represent hope in the community.”

The Well is already established in the area through the outdoor projects it tuns in collaboration with other charities.

It was also recently granted £2,000 by Kendal Town Council towards the opening of the new centre in the town for addiction help.

The money for the charity was voted through at the council’s audit and grants committee meeting back in January.

There have been many success stories – including that of James Campbell whose journey was reported by The Mail recently – to come out of The Well’s system, and this step forward means they have increased capacity to help more and more people turn their lives around.
