PROGRESS is well underway for the £200k refurbishment of a town play park.

Construction work began on St George's Road Park in Millom on January 4, after receiving just over £200,000 in funding from Copeland Council.

The park will include state-of-the-art climbing towers and slides, group swings and spinning equipment to entertain the children of Millom for years to come.

The park is currently in phase 1 of the renovation plans which includes the complete refurbishment of the older children's play area.

Funding for phase 2, which covers the infants and younger juniors play area has been granted by the FCC Communities Foundation, who awarded £99,949 for the renovation plans.

Simon Donnelly, Millom Town Councillor, hopes the play area will be great place for children after a difficult 12 months.

He said: "We set off with a plan to build one of the best free play areas for our local communities to come and bring their children for a low cost day out.

"Children have really suffered these last 12 months due to the Covid restrictions and hopefully this will be a great place for them to play and remember how fun it is to be a kid."

The park is currently closed and is being monitored by CCTV whilst the ongoing renovation work takes place.

Cllr Donnelly revealed that work is expected to continue on the play park throughout the coming months, with the newly renovated play area due to open its gates to the public before the summer.
