THE Government has accepted the new unitary authority around Morecambe Bay's proposals for a further round of consultation.

The Government will now be formally consulting on The Bay option, after receiving the joint submission by local councils.

Under the plan, South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) Barrow Borough Council (BBC), and Lancaster City Council (LCC) would be replaced with a single-tier local authority.

They are hopeful that the project will be accepted.

The Bay unitary authority intends to deliver services provided by the three councils, but with the addition of taking on the services currently run by the relevant county councils.

The consultation between the council and businesses, community and voluntary sector organisations and members of the public who live, work or study in South Lakeland, Barrow and Lancaster, is still on going and will close on April 19.

Business and citizens are welcomed to give their thoughts on the proposal.

The proposal can be found on the South Lakeland District Council website.
